Terps Fall To No. 13 Penn State, 1-0, In Key Regional Match
Oct. 8, 2002
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Maryland women's soccer team played valianted although short-handed in a tough regional defeat to No. 13 Penn State, 1-0, at a chilly Jeffrey Field on Tuesday night.
Penn State scored the game's only goal as junior midfielder Joanna Lohman scored off a pass from freshman Tiffany Weimer in the 67th minute. Lohman shot the ball from top right side of the 18-yard box into the lower left corner.
Maryland suffered a major blow as freshman goalkeeper Mariel Wilner (Owings Mills, Md.) was issued a red card and ejected from the game with 37:06 left in the second half. Wilner was called for a foul and issued a card when she came out to make a play on National Player of the Year Christie Welsh and slide into the forward.
Penn State was awarded a penalty kick as junior Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.) came on in relief of Wilner in the 53rd minute. The Nittany Lions failed to convert on the play as Heidi Drummond's penalty kick deflected off the right goalpost and play continued. Barnhill then came up big as she made a subsequent save on a shot in the box by Lohman.
Barnhill played very strong in goal for the Terps as she made five saves to equal her career high.
The Terps return to action on Friday as they host another major regional match as ACC foe Virginia (6-3-2 overall, 0-1 ACC) comes to College Park for a 7 p.m. match this Friday at Ludwig Field.
