Mynarski's Late Goal Lifts Terps Past George Mason
Oct. 6, 1999
FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior tri-captain Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the day at 81:26 to lift Maryland to a 1-0 victory over George Mason at the George Mason Stadium on Wednesday. Mynarski leads the Terps with five goals and ranks eighth on the Maryland career goals list with 17.
George Mason was called for a foul just outside the penalty box which set up the game winning score. Senior Lindsay Basalyga (Cincinnati, Ohio) took the penalty kick and found Mynarski on the left side of the goal. She headed the ball in from about three yards out.
Maryland’s defense was very impressive. The Terps shutout Mason’s Katy Robertson, the nation’s third leading scorer, who has scored at least one goal in five consecutive games. Sophomore back Carrie Klotz (Cortland, N.Y.) played great defense on Robertson throughout the game.
“Carrie Klotz did a great job marking their top player,” said Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. “The win was a complete team victory. We got a great effort on defense and turned things around.”
In goal, Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) played the first half and made two saves, while Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.) came on to play the second half and recorded the victory making three saves. It was the first shared shutouts between the goalies this season. In their careers, Wolff now has 9.0 shutouts and Serrins has 6.0 to rank fourth and fifth on Maryland’s career shutout list.
Maryland (4-7-1 overall) has now won five consecutive games in the series against George Mason (6-5 overall) and outscored the Patriots 15-2 over that span.
The Terps open a five-game homestand after three games in the state of Virginia. Maryland hosts Rutgers this Friday at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field and Navy on Sunday night at 7 p.m.
