Oct. 4, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 23 Maryland women's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss in double-overtime to ACC foe NC State on a windy Friday night at Ludwig Field before 1,541 fans. The Terps fall to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack moves to 6-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference.
The Wolfpack's Jordan Allison headed home a corner kick from Annika Schmidt in the 103rd minute to give NC State the victory.
"I was pleased with how we played," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "We were unfortunate. We also had shots go off the cross bar and post. I thought we played well."
After NC State jumped on top 1-0 on an Adrienne Barnes goal in the 13th minute, the Terps rallied to tie the game nine minutes later. Freshman Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) converted a pretty cross from Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) from the deep right corner and beat NC State keeper Gretchen Lear in the 22nd minute.
Maryland dominated the game for much of regulation outshooting NC State, 19-4 through the first 90 minites and taking six corner kicks to the Pack's zero.
NC State played a very physical game and racked up a 20-6 foul margin while also picking three yellow cards.
The loss was Maryland's first in overtime in three years, having gone 3-0-2 since a 3-2 loss at William & Mary on Oct. 2, 1999. Maryland last lost a home overtime game in 1998 to Florida State.
The Terps look to get back on the winning side on Tuesday as they travel to No. 12 Penn State for a 7 p.m. match-up at Jeffrey Field.
