Maryland Dominates William & Mary In Regional Victory, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's soccer team finished a big weekend with its second win as many games and extended its winning streak to three with a 1-0 victory over William & Mary on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Terps are now 7-3-0 overall with the big Mid-Atlantic regional win over the Tribe, which falls to 4-4-1, going winless in its last five matches (0-4-1).
"I was extremely happy with how we dominated this game from the opening whistle," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "From the opening possession we controlled the game. This is a very good regional victory for us and concludes a great weekend coupled with the ACC win over Duke on Friday night."
Maryland's defense backstopped by freshman keeper Mariel Wilner (Owings Mills, Md.) kept the Tribe at bay all afternoon. Wilner, who was injured in Friday's win over Duke, returned to make five saves and post her first collegiate solo shutout. Wilner holds the Maryland high school record for shutout with 38 at the McDonogh School. Overall it was the Terps' third whitewash of the year.
The Terps dominated the Tribe in every area of the game, outshooting them 24-7 and taking 13 corner kicks to William & Mary's one.
Maryland has now won two in a row in the series with William & Mary after dropping six in a row.
The Terps return to action and look to extend their winning streak to four this Friday night at ACC foe NC State comes to College Park for a 7 p.m. showdown at Ludwig Field.
