Maryland Marches Over George Washington, 5-0
Sept. 22, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's soccer team got just what the doctor ordered on Sunday afternoon. On the heels of a tough, 3-1 loss to No. 8 Wake Forest on Friday night in the ACC opener, the Terps pounded George Washington, 5-0 at Ludwig Field.
Maryland freshman sensation Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) scored two goals as the Terps piled up a 34-4 shot margin in the match. Andrzejewski has keyed the Terps' offensive outburst this season and now has a team-high six goals in eight games. Through last season's 19-game schedule, the Terps' leading scorers managed five goals for the entire campaign.
Maryland (5-3 overall) also now has 23 goals in eight goals after just 24 all of last season. It is also the third time this season Maryland has notched five goals in a game after scoring a maximum of three in a game all of last season.
"This game is exactly what we needed, a game like this," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "We went out and fought hard. We fought for 90 minutes. We got the players in rhythm. It feels really good to get a game like this where we can get everyone some playing time."
Eight different Terps posted points in the match as Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.), Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) and Melissa Anderson (Annapolis, Md.) added goals in addition to Andrzejewski's pair. For Francis, the goal was the first of her collegiate career after she had four assists in the Terps' first seven matches.
On the assist-end, five different players were credited with helpers: Dana Jarzyniecki (Rochester, N.Y.) on Poulin's goal in the 18th minute. Poulin, herself on Andrzejewski's first of the day in the 36th minute. Freshman Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) on Francis' first goal in the 40th minute. Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) on Andrzejewski's second of the game in the 51st minute and freshman Danielle Malagari (Clarksburg, Md.) on Anderson's goal in the 75th minute.
The Terps' defense was also strong, as they posted their second shutout of the season. Freshman Mariel Wilner (Owings Mills, Md.) and junior Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.) shared the whitewash as each player made one save in each half.
The Terps return to action on Friday night as they host ACC rival Duke at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The Blue Devils come off a 2-1 loss to Marquette on Sunday afternoon.
Maryland is now 4-0 against George Washington (2-4 overall) under Higgins-Cirovski, who coached the Colonials from 1991-97. Overall, Maryland has a 10-6-2 mark against GW.
