Terps Win, 1-0, At George Mason On Rozumalski Goal
Sept. 17, 2006
FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior forward Kelly Rozumalski scored her second goal of the season in the 67th minute of play to give the University of Maryland women's soccer team a 1-0 victory at George Mason Sunday night at George Mason Stadium.
"I'm proud of our team," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "They've bounced back this weekend from two 1-0 losses. George Mason fought hard tonight, and made us earn every ounce of this victory. This is a great way to finish our non-conference schedule. We are excited to start ACC play with Clemson this Thursday and having to battle for 90 minutes tonight will help our team growth heading into conference play."
After a scoreless first half, it was the Patriots who came out the aggressors in the second half. But senior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick made three of her five saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half to keep the game tied at 0-0.
The Terps survived the pressure of Mason and countered in the 67th minute with Rozumalski's goal. The scoring opportunity started with freshman midfielder Molly Dreska. She crossed the ball to the far post where senior midfielder Sarah Sample flicked a header back to the front of the goal where a streaking Rozumalski finished it from three yards out for the score.
"All three players on the goal deserve credit," said Pensky. "Molly served a terrific ball. Sarah did well on the back post to put the ball back across the face of the goal, and Roz did well to finish her chance."
Maryland continued to put pressure on the Patriots, firing three shots in the next nine minutes, but could not put another goal on the board. That was partly due to Mason goalkeeper Kasey Davenport, who finished the game with eight saves.
Rozumalski nearly picked up her second goal of the evening in the 85th minute, but her shot struck the crossbar.
The victory is the second in a row for the Terps (4-3-1) and is their fourth of the season. All four wins have come via shutout.
Maryland is off until Thursday, September 21, when they being ACC play by hosting Clemson at 7:00 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
