Women's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision To No. 6 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Marcia Wallis scored two goals as the No. 6 Stanford women's soccer team defeated No. 23 Maryland 3-0 Sunday afternoon to capture the Stanford Nike Invitational title at New Maloney Field. With the win, the Cardinal improved to 5-1-0, while Maryland fell to 4-4-0.
Marcie Ward gave Stanford the lead in the 10th minute when she scored on a breakaway set up by midfielder Kelsey Carlson.
Wallis tallied the first of her two goals with :09 seconds remaining in the first half. Christy LaPierre sent the ball down the left sideline before freshman Brittany Oliviera tracked it down in the corner and crossed it to the center. Wallis was right there for the one-touch goal, giving the Cardinal a 2-0 lead at the half.
At the 56:01 mark, Ward fed Wallis with a pass inside the box for Wallis' sixth goal of the season (third of the tournament). Stanford outshot the Terrapins 17-5, including a 9-1 advantage in the first half.
In Sunday's first game, No. 13 Virginia got a goal in the 76th minute from Sarah Lane as the Cavaliers held on to defeat No. 19 Santa Clara 1-0.
The Terps return to action on Friday night when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to battle nationally-ranked Wake Forest at Spry Stadium.
