Sept. 16, 2005
College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team battled No. 2 Penn State, but could not pull off the upset as the Nittany Lions defeated the Terps, 3-0, Friday night at Ludwig Field.
Maryland held the potent Penn State offense in check for much of the first half, but sophomore defender Denay Riley scored her first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute by heading a loose ball off a corner kick into the Terrapin goal for a 1-0 lead.
Penn State scored its second goal in the 73rd minute when a Terp defender was called for a foul on freshman Allie Long inside the penalty box and All-American Tiffany Weimer was able to score on the penalty kick.
The Nittany Lions capped off the scoring in the 82nd minute on a header by Carmelina Moscato off a long cross from the far right corner by Holly Lincoln.
For the Terps, junior goalkeeper Nikki Resnick returned after missing much of the Villanova game and all of the Rutgers game and made six saves.
Maryland concludes its non-conference schedule on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. vs. Yale at Ludwig Field.
