Villanova Downs Terps 2-0 In Maryland/adidas Classic
Sept. 8, 2005
College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team lost a 2-0 decision to Villanova Thursday night at Ludwig Field, but the long-lasting effects from the game may not be known for a couple of days.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Lindsay Finnegan was able to get a foot on a loose ball in front of the Terrapin net and put home her second goal of the season. But the score wasn't the most important part of the play, as Maryland goalkeeper Nikki Resnick had to leave the game with an undisclosed injury and was not able to return.
Things continued to go from bad to worse for the Terps in the 20th minute when senior All-American Mallory Mahar had to leave the game due to injury.
Despite losing two of its leaders, Maryland continued to battle and was able to control the flow and possession of the ball in the early minutes of the second half. But all it took was one possession in the 49th minute for Finnegan to tack on her second goal of the night on a 30-yard shot into the upper right corner of the Terp net for a 2-0 Villanova lead.
For the game, Maryland outshot the Wildcats 12-6, including a 7-4 advantage in the second half.
The Maryland/adidas Classic concludes on Sunday, September 11, with Villanova taking on UC Santa Barbara in the first game at 12 Noon, while the Terps and Rutgers are scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
