Well-Balanced Attack Helps Women's Soccer Past UMBC
Sept. 1, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland womenís soccer team used goals from five different players to post an impressive 6-1 win over UMBC on Wednesday night at Ludwig Field. Senior tri-captain Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) scored two goals in a game for the first time in her four-year career and moved into a tie for eighth on Marylandís all-time scoring list with 39 points with the Terpsí final two goals at 48:05 and 73:12.
The Terps (2-0) built a 4-0 first-half lead on goals by sophomore forward Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) at 19:11, Terri Greer (Woodbridge, Va.) at 20:19, Julie Nelson (McLean, Va.) at 38:11 and Kim King (Media, Pa.) at 40:35. For Beirne and Nelson, the goals were the first of their college careers. Nelsonís goal was especially sweet as the senior scored in just her second game back after missing the entire 1998 season with back surgery. She also added an assist on Kingís breakaway goal for the first multi-point game of her career.
Marylandís six goals at home were the most they have scored at Ludwig Field since an 8-0 win over UMBC on October 1, 1996.
In net, Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.), starting in place of an injured Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) recorded three saves for the win.
UMBCís lone goal came from junior froward Beth Quintavalle (Haddonfield, N.J.) at 61:12.
Maryland travels to California to play in the USC/FILA Tournament this weekend. The Terps will play host USC on Friday at 4 p.m. (ET) and UCLA on Monday at 4 p.m. (ET). The Terps return home to host the 1999 Maryland/FILA Tournament with Baylor, Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania on Friday, Sept. 10.
