Aug. 31, 2003
SEATTLE - Sophomore Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) scored two goals in a span of 1:11 as the No. 23 Terps topped the Washington State Cougars 3-0 in the Arena Sports Pac-10/ACC Challenge at Husky Stadium on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon.
Francis got the Terps on the board as she scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute. Francis knocked the ball into the lower right corner converting her first goal of the year. The PK was awarded as a shot by senior Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) was knocked down with a handball by Washington State's Mariette Boyce.
Francis than struck again just more than a minute later as she converted a cross from the left wing from sophomore Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) and beat Cougar keeper Sara Leibowitz from about eight yards out to make it 2-0 with 19:06 left in the fist half.
Francis and the Terps received a scare as the All-ACC selection went down with a right ankle injury less than three minutes later and sat out the rest of the game. She was diagnosed right ankle ligament strain and will be re-evaluated when the team returns to College Park.
The Terps built the lead to 3-0 as Dekker scored her second of the tournament on a 15-yard blast off a thru ball from Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) with 4:38 left in the first half.
Senior goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.) made four saves to record her fourth career solo shutout, one day after her 21st birthday.
Maryland returns to action this Friday night, Sept. 5, as the Terps travel to Williamsburg, Va. for a battle with the Tribe at 4 p.m. The gametime has been re-scheduled from the previous time of 7 p.m.
The Terps open the home season against No. 6 Penn State -- the team that knocked Maryland out of the 2002 NCAA Tournament -- on Sunday, September 7 at 5:30 p.m.
