Maryland Romps Over Fordham In Women's Soccer Opener
Aug. 30, 2002
STORRS, Conn. - The Maryland women's soccer team opened the 2002 season with a convincing 5-0 victory over Fordham in the first game of the 2002 UConn Classic. The Terps received goals from five different players in the win.
"The freshmen really contributed to the win," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, who picked up her 99th career coaching victory with the win. "We had a lot of chances and were able to convert on five of them."
Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime as freshman sensation Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal on a pass from Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) Andrzjewski scored on a deep shot from the left side of the field that deflected off the right goalpost and in.
Junior Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) scored the second goal on a breakway when she deeked the goalkeeper and scored in the 27th minute.
In the second half, Francis was once again the playmaker as she set up Audra Poulin's (Silver Spring, Md.) goal in the 61st minute to make it 4-0.
Sophomore Melissa Anderson (Annapolis, Md.) scored her first college goal in the 80th minute as she deflected in a header shot by Mahar which began with a corner kick from Danielle Malagari (Clarksburg, Md.).
The Terp defense was solid, stopping all four shots by the Rams to post their fourth straight season opener via shutout. Freshman Mariel Wilner (Owings Mills, Md.) made two saves in the first 66 minutes and was followed by Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.), who made one save.
Sophomore Jen Lovecchio (Vineland, N.J.) preserved the shutout with a key defensive save with time winding down in the second half.
It was Maryland's fourth straight season-opening win (all via shutout) and the most they have scored in an opener since a 6-0 blowout of Virginia Tech in 1995. The five goals were also the most Maryland has scored since a 9-0 win over Howard in 2000. The five were also two more than Maryland scored in any game last season -- three was their high on two occasions.
Maryland returns to action on Sunday as they have the No. 9 UConn Huskies at 2:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Internet at whus.org.
