Terps' Jones To Compete In NCAA Track And Field Championships
May 30, 2000
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Vanessa Jones (Olney, Md.) will participate in the high jump event at this week's NCAA Track and Field Championships at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C. She qualified for the meet with the seventh-best jump in the nation among collegiate women this season. Jones will compete in the trials of the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night with the finals that night.
Jones is a two-time All-ACC selection in the high jump. She earned the honors this season with a first place finish in the high jump on April 21 in Durham. Jones earned her first career ACC championship with a jump of 5-8 ½, as she became the first Terp woman to win the event at the ACC meet since Tamela Penny with a jump of 5-7 in 1984.
Jones was dominant in the high jump this spring. She earned her NCAA qualifying leap of 6-0 ½ at the Seminole Twilight meet on May 13. Her mark qualified her for the Olympic Trials in addition to the NCAA meet. At the time of her jump, it was tied for the fifth-best collegiate mark of the season.
Jones' first-place finish in the high jump at the Seminole Twilight meet marked the fourth time this season she has earned a first-place finish. Jones took first at both of Maryland's home meets. Her jump of 5-10 ½ earned her first at the Maryland Invitational on April 1. The following week she took first again with a leap of 5-11 ¼ at the Terrapin Invitational. Additionally, Jones' first-place mark of 6-0 at the ACC Championships was instrumental in leading the Terps to their highest finish in 13 years -- third place.
