#3 Terps Seek Final Four Bid Saturday
May 17, 2012 BUY TICKETS! | Championship Central COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 3 Maryland will battle No. 6 Loyola at noon Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Terps (18-3) topped a pesky UMass squad last weekend to advance to the second round. Brooke Griffin nabbed WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week honors after leading Maryland with six points on three goals and three assists. Tewaaraton Award finalist Katie Schwarzmann added five points. Loyola is coached by Terrapin alum Jen Adams. Adams was Maryland's first Tewaaraton Award winner in 2001. The Greyhounds (14-5) captured their second straight BIG EAST title earlier this month and topped Penn in overtime last weekend to land in this year's quarterfinals. The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the final four in Stony Brook next weekend to face the winner of the No. 7 Duke/No. 2 Northwestern quarterfinal. Event Multimedia

· The Terps have a healthy Karri Ellen Johnson back in the lineup in 2012. The senior captain and two-time IWLCA First Team All-American missed 12 games last season due to an injury. She has resumed her vital role in Maryland's offense. Maryland relies on returning starters Kristy Black and Alex Aust. Black serves as a captain in 2012 after scoring 31 goals as a junior. Aust tallied 42 points as a sophomore in her first year as a starter and has a team-high 93 in 2012. · Katie Schwarzmann, the 2011 IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year and Tewaaraton finalist, leads the Terps through the middle. The 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Schwarzmann led Maryland in goals last season with 65 and boasts 65 as a junior. · The defense has three new starters in 2012 after the departure of Katie Gallagher, Brittany Poist and Sara Cooper. Iliana Sanza, a second team all-region pick as a sophomore, is the lone returning starter for Maryland. While the unit is young, it is no less disciplined. Sanza leads the back line as a junior and, along with four-year starter goalie Brittany Dipper, do the majority of the organizing. · Dipper, the 2011 IWLCA National Goalie of the Year, is back for her final season in College Park. She has been tabbed to three straight ACC championship all-tournament teams while leading Maryland to conference titles in each season since her arrival. 2012 Season Preview Scouting The Greyhounds
· Marlee Paton leads Loyola in goals (54), assists (35) and points (89). Joanna Dalton has a team-high 53 draw controls. · Kerry Stoothoff seals up the cage for the Greyhounds and boasts a 9.69 goals against average and 154 saves. · Loyola's offense attacks early, recording 133 of its 238 goals in the first 30 minutes of play. · Loyola is coached by Maryland alum and Tewaaraton Award winner Jen Adams. Adams joined current Terp head coach Cathy Reese and assistant Quinn Carney on Maryland's 1998 national championship team. Reese and Adams would later team up to coach the Terps in 2007 and 2008. Former Terrapin All-American Dana Dobbie is also an assistant with the Greyhounds. · Maryland leads the all-time series 28-3. The Terps are 11-1 in the series in College Park and are unbeaten in the NCAA tournament (3-0).
Poll Central Griffin Guides #3 Terps Past UMass in NCAA First Round · Griffin joined freshman Kelly McPartland and senior Kristy Black as Terps with hat tricks on the day. Maryland is now 11-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Tewaaraton Award finalist Katie Schwarzmann added five points on two goals and three assists. · Defensively, the Terps were able to limit one of the nation's top offenses, holding UMass to 10 goals on the day. A-10 Player of the Year Katie Ferris managed only one goal Saturday. Iliana Sanza tallied a game-high six ground balls and also caused a pair of turnovers to lead a steady defensive effort. Friends Before Foes · Reese and Adams helped guide Maryland to the national championship as student-athletes in 1998. Reese went on to be an assistant for Maryland while Adams was a Terp from 1999-2001. Adams also served as Reese's assistant coach at Denver from 2004-2006. The two would later head up Maryland's program in 2007 and 2008. · Former Maryland All-American Dana Dobbie is also an assistant at Loyola. Terp assistant Quinn Carney played with Adams and Reese on the '98 national championship squad. Schwarzmann Named Tewaaraton Finalist · Schwarzmann, the 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, will have the opportunity to become the third Terrapin to win the top award in college lacrosse, joining Jen Adams (2001) and Caitlyn McFadden (2010). · A member of the 2011-12 U.S. women's national team, the Sykesville, Md., product was named an All-ACC selection for the third straight season. Schwarzmann, Sanza and Reese Snag Top ACC Honors · Schwarzmann garnered top ACC honors after guiding Maryland to its fourth straight conference championship and a 17-3 overall record. The Sykesville, Md., product leads the ACC in goals. · Sanza has started every game for the nation's fourth-ranked defense. She led the Terrapins in ground balls and caused turnovers and was third in draw controls. Against ACC opponents, Sanza tallied 11 ground balls, 10 draw controls, and 11 caused turnovers. · Reese was named ACC Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season. The award is her fifth overall in six seasons at the helm of the Maryland program. Reese garnered her 100th win at Maryland Feb. 16 against Delaware. The Stretch · The Terps defeated three nationally ranked opponents (Duke, North Carolina, and Georgetown) and won their fourth straight ACC title. Maryland outscored foes 60-30 during the grinding six-day span. Tourney Terrapins · The Terps' 28 invitations to the tournament ranks No. 1 among all NCAA Division I women's lacrosse programs. Black Paces Terps in Statement Win vs. Hoyas · Maryland picked up goals from eight different players on the night, including a hat trick from freshman Kelly McPartland. Seniors Karri Ellen Johnson and Bria Phillips combined for three goals. Johnson led all players with a season-high eight draw controls. Katie Schwarzmann added four points on two goals and two assists. #3 Terps Capture Fourth Straight ACC Crown · Katie Schwarzmann was named tournament most valuable player after capping her stellar weekend with a six-point showing against the Tar Heels. The junior midfielder joined Karri Ellen Johnson with four goals each to lead the Maryland attack. Dipper Lands on ACC All-Tournament Team...Again · She joined classmate Karri Ellen Johnson, and juniors Alex Aust, Iliana Sanza and Katie Schwarzmann on this year's list. Aust Re-Writes ACC History · With five assists against Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals, the junior attacker set a single-game tournament record. · She ended the championship with 13 assists. That mark established the highest number of assists in any one tournament in conference history. Her 17 points was also a single-tournament record. Title Terps · This year's title match victory was Maryland's third consecutive in the ACC championship against UNC. The victory avenged an early-April loss to the Tar Heels. Near Perfection · The Terps turned the ball over only once the entire game and dominated the ground ball category 14-4. Goalie Brittany Dipper saved nine of the 13 shots Duke attempted on the day. · The Terrapin defense held Duke scoreless for over 30 minutes after the Blue Devils tallied the first goal of the game. Aust Nabs Two ACC Offensive Player of the Week Honors · Aust played an integral role in two wins against Penn and Towson in late March. Aust tallied 10 assists over two games, including a school record six assists at No. 8 Penn. · She then recorded a career-high 10 points, including a school-record six assists, as Maryland cruised past #18 Princeton 15-9. High Octane Offense · Katie Schwarzmann leads the Terps with 65 goals. Six Terps boast 30 or more goals this season. Johnson and the Climb · Johnson is also quietly making her ascent on the career points list, due in part to a breakout season assist-wise, boasting 16 in 19 games in 2012. She is currently fourth on the points list with 293. Aust Electrifies · The junior is currently third on Maryland's single-season assists list with 51. She has also dished a school-record six assists on two occasions this season. Schwarzmann on the Attack · Katie Schwarzmann, the 2011 IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year and Tewaaraton finalist, continues to lead the Terps through the middle. Widely known as the fastest player in the nation, Schwarzmann led Maryland in goals last season with 65 and has tallied 65 through 21 games this season. · She was the first junior to be named captain since Sarah Mollison in 2010. Schwarzmann is second on the team in points (83), ground balls (29) and draw controls (43). Johnson Nabs ACC Offensive Weekly Honor · Johnson, of Annapolis, Md., accumulated six goals, eight draw controls and an assist in Maryland's two victories on the week. With a pair of goals against Richmond on Tuesday, Johnson became only the third player in Maryland women's lacrosse history to record 200 career goals. #6 Syrcause Halts Terps Home Winning Streak · Despite holding a distinct advantage in nearly every statistical category including shots in which it trumped the Orange 30-20, Maryland picked up its second loss this season. It was the first regular season loss at home in head coach Cathy Reese's six-year tenure. · Sophomore Beth Glaros led Maryland with a hat trick and four draw controls. Katie Schwarzmann and Karri Ellen Johnson added two goals apiece. Brittany Dipper racked up eight saves in the cage. Schwarzmann Nabs ACC Offensive Weekly Honors · Schwarzmann scored six goals and tallied two assists on the week, including a hat trick against No. 6 Virginia. The junior from Sykesville, Md., also racked up two draw controls and caused a turnover to pace the Terps to their first ACC win of the year. One Terp vs. One Team · Brooke Griffin tallied five goals against Delaware in a 21-4 rout of the Hens. Katie Schwarzmann scored six goals at No. 17 Penn State in a 16-6 victory on the road. Karri Ellen Johnson (5g) and Schwarzmann (3g), tallied the same or more goals as the Tigers against Towson. · Schwarzmann single handedly outscored Duke with four goals in the ACC semifinals last Saturday. Hat Tricks Aplenty in Win vs. No. 6 Virginia · Maryland clearly shifted its focus to winning the draw in the second half, besting the Cavaliers 10-5 in the category including several key draws down the stretch after Virginia shrunk the Terrapin lead to 8-7 with 13:12 remaining. A 3-0 run with goals from McPartland, Schwarzmann and Alex Aust in-and-around the five minute mark gave the Terps a comfortable lead for the remainder of the match. Sanza Nets ACC Weekly Honor · The Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List nominee racked up eight draw controls over two games, while also tallying four groundballs and a caused turnover. Milestones Galore in Delaware Win ·Head coach and former Terrapin All-American Cathy Reese won her 100th career game at Maryland and senior attacker Karri Ellen Johnson scored career goal No. 188 to move into sole possession of third on the Terps' all-time goals list. Lacrosse Magazine Previews 2012 Terps Protect This House · Maryland is 60-2 at home under head coach Cathy Reese. · The Terps have won all five games in which they have played an opponent ranked No. 1 or 2 at home in the past five seasons. The Terps are 200-16 in College Park dating back to 1990 with 13 perfect seasons in that span. Terps and the 2012 Tewaaraton · Four Maryland players were named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Watch List, the early compilation of players who were under consideration for college lacrosse's highest individual honor. · The Terps boasted more Tewaaraton nominees than any other program in the nation. Brittany Dipper, Karri Ellen Johnson, Iliana Sanza and Katie Schwarzmann were tabbed to this year's list. All four were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-Americans earlier this season. · Johnson, Schwarzmann and Sanza made the following cut as three of 25 final nominees for the award. New-look Defense · Sanza was named an IL Preseason All-American after garnering all-region honors in 2011. She teams up with freshmen Megan Douty and Shanna Brady and junior Melissa Diepold to form Maryland's defensive four. · Maryland has surrendered only 68 goals in the first half this season. The Terps held Towson and Virginia Tech scoreless in the first half this season. Welcome Rookies! · Maryland boasts a large, talented class of freshman this season. A total of 10 freshmen saw their first collegiate action in the season opener. · Nicole Aust, Shanna Brady, Erin Collins, Megan Douty, Kristen Lamon, Kelly McPartland, Mattie Meredith and Taylor Salandra join redshirt freshmen Kelsey Horton, Brooke Griffin and Abbey Clipp. · Brady, Douty, Griffin and McPartland have started in all 21 matches in 2012.
