Terps Battle Tech in ACC Quarters Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Third-seeded Maryland takes on Virginia Tech for the second consecutive game when the two squads face off in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Friday. First draw is slated for 2 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Terps (13-3) wrapped up the conference regular season on a high note last Saturday with a dominant 19-5 victory against Virginia Tech at Ludwig Field. Maryland was sparked by 10 different goal scorers, including a four-goal showing from freshman Kelly McPartland. Maryland is unbeaten in first round games at the ACC championship. The Terps are seeking their fourth straight conference title this weekend. The winner of Friday's game will battle No. 2 seed Duke Saturday. · The Terps are ecstatic to have a healthy Karri Ellen Johnson back in the lineup in 2012. The senior captain and two-time IWLCA First Team All-American missed 12 games last season due to injury. She is poised to resume her vital role in Maryland's offense. Maryland will also rely on returning starters Kristy Black and Alex Aust. Black will serve as a captain in 2012 after scoring 31 goals as a junior. Aust tallied 42 points as a sophomore in her first year as a starter. · Katie Schwarzmann, the 2011 IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year and Tewaaraton finalist, returns to lead the Terps through the middle. Widely known as the fastest player in the nation, Schwarzmann led Maryland in goals last season with 65. Beth Glaros finished her freshman season with a bang in 2011, scoring a game-high four goals in the national title match against Northwestern. She played in all 23 games for the Terps, tallying 22 goals. · The defense will have three new starters in 2012 after the departure of Katie Gallagher, Brittany Poist and Sara Cooper. Iliana Sanza, a second team all-region pick as a sophomore, is the lone returning starter for Maryland. While the unit will be young, don't expect it to be any less disciplined. Sanza will lead the back line as a junior and, along with four-year starter goalie Brittany Dipper, will do the majority of the organizing. · Dipper, the 2011 IWLCA National Goalie of the Year, is back for her final season in College Park. She has been tabbed to three straight ACC championship all-tournament teams while leading Maryland to conference titles in each season since her arrival. 2012 Season Preview Scouting The Hokies
· Senior midfielder Jessica Nonn was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week for her role in an upset win over No. 7 Virginia two weeks ago. Nonn leads VT with 39 points on 29 goals and 10 assists. She also has a Hokie-best 45 draw controls. She was held in check for the majority of last Saturday's match before a pair of yellow cards forced her to the bench. · The Hokies are outscoring opponents by a slim 173-165 margin. VT has won two of its last three games heading into the tournament. · Maryland leads the all-time series, 9-0. The Terps topped Tech last season, 16-8, in a game that was played in Blacksburg.
Poll Central Balanced Attack Guides Maryland Past Tech · Maryland benefited from a total of 10 goal scorers on the day. Kristy Black, Katie Schwarzmann, and Brooke Griffin all netted hat tricks and Alex Aust recorded three assists. · Fueled by the energy of the unveiling of their new Under Armour PRIDE uniforms, the Terps were absolutely dominant in the first half, topping Tech 11-0 in the period. Aust Tabbed ACC Offensive Player of the Week · Aust, of Sterling, Va., tallied 14 points on the week including a career-high 10 points on four goals and a school record six assists in Maryland's 15-9 win over No. 18 Princeton. In the conference regular season finale against Virginia Tech, Aust accounted for one goal and three assists. Aust Leads #4 Terps Past #18 Princeton · Aust led Maryland in goals with four and was backed up by a trio of hat tricks from Katie Schwarzmann, Kelly McPartland and Kristy Black. Brooke Griffin tallied four points on a goal and three assists. High Octane Offense · Katie Schwarzmann leads the Terps with 50 goals. Seven Terps boast double-digit goals this season, seven have tallied 20 or more scores. Johnson and the Climb · Johnson is also quietly making her ascent on the career points list, due in part to a breakout season assist-wise, boasting 13 through 14 games in 2012. She is currently fourth on the points list with 277. Aust Electrifies · The junior has tallied at least three points in each of the last nine games and 28 over her previous four matches. · She has dished a school-record six assists on two occasions this season. Schwarzmann on the Attack · Katie Schwarzmann, the 2011 IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year and Tewaaraton finalist, continues to lead the Terps through the middle. Alex Aust continued her recent dominance with a nine-point showing via three goals and a school-record six assists. Johnson Nabs ACC Offensive Weekly Honor · Johnson, of Annapolis, Md., accumulated six goals, eight draw controls and an assist in Maryland's two victories on the week. With a pair of goals against Richmond on Tuesday, Johnson became only the third player in Maryland women's lacrosse history to record 200 career goals. #6 Syrcause Halts Terps Home Winning Streak · Despite holding a distinct advantage in nearly every statistical category including shots in which it trumped the Orange 30-20, Maryland picked up its second loss this season. It was the first regular season loss at home in head coach Cathy Reese's six-year tenure. · Sophomore Beth Glaros led Maryland with a hat trick and four draw controls. Katie Schwarzmann and Karri Ellen Johnson added two goals apiece. Brittany Dipper racked up eight saves in the cage. Schwarzmann Nabs ACC Offensive Weekly Honors · Schwarzmann scored six goals and tallied two assists on the week, including a hat trick against No. 6 Virginia. The junior from Sykesville, Md., also racked up two draw controls and caused a turnover to pace the Terps to their first ACC win of the year. One Terp vs. One Team · Brooke Griffin tallied five goals against Delaware in a 21-4 rout of the Hens. Katie Schwarzmann scored six goals at No. 17 Penn State in a 16-6 victory on the road. Karri Ellen Johnson (5g) and Schwarzmann (3g), tallied the same or more goals as the Tigers against Towson. Hat Tricks Aplenty in Win vs. No. 6 Virginia · Maryland clearly shifted its focus to winning the draw in the second half, besting the Cavaliers 10-5 in the category including several key draws down the stretch after Virginia shrunk the Terrapin lead to 8-7 with 13:12 remaining. A 3-0 run with goals from McPartland, Schwarzmann and Alex Aust in-and-around the five minute mark gave the Terps a comfortable lead for the remainder of the match. Sanza Nets ACC Weekly Honor · The Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List nominee racked up eight draw controls over two games, while also tallying four groundballs and a caused turnover. Milestones Galore in Delaware Win ·Head coach and former Terrapin All-American Cathy Reese won her 100th career game at Maryland and senior attacker Karri Ellen Johnson scored career goal No. 188 to move into sole possession of third on the Terps' all-time goals list. Lacrosse Magazine Previews 2012 Terps Protect This House · Maryland is 58-2 at home under head coach Cathy Reese. · The Terps have won all five games in which they have played an opponent ranked No. 1 or 2 at home in the past five seasons. The Terps are 198-16 in College Park dating back to 1990 with 13 perfect seasons in that span. Four Terps Tabbed to Tewaaraton Watch List · Four Maryland players were named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Watch List, the early compilation of players who will be under consideration for college lacrosse's highest individual honor. · The Terps boasted more Tewaaraton nominees than any other program in the nation.
