#4 Terps Tangle with Towson Tuesday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 4 Maryland women's lacrosse team plays host to Towson at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game will be shown live on TerpsTV Premium. The Terps (9-2, 2-1 ACC) picked up a road win at James Madison Saturday. Karri Ellen Johnson and Katie Schwarzmann led Maryland with four goals each. The duo has combined for 14 goals in the last two games. Towson is 6-2 this season with its losses coming to Syracuse and Johns Hopkins. Tuesday's match is the last at home for Maryland until April 14.

· The Terps are ecstatic to have a healthy Karri Ellen Johnson back in the lineup in 2012. The senior captain and two-time IWLCA First Team All-American missed 12 games last season due to injury. She is poised to resume her vital role in Maryland's offense. Maryland will also rely on returning starters Kristy Black and Alex Aust. Black will serve as a captain in 2012 after scoring 31 goals as a junior. Aust tallied 42 points as a sophomore in her first year as a starter. · Katie Schwarzmann, the 2011 IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year and Tewaaraton finalist, returns to lead the Terps through the middle. Widely known as the fastest player in the nation, Schwarzmann led Maryland in goals last season with 65. Beth Glaros finished her freshman season with a bang in 2011, scoring a game-high four goals in the national title match against Northwestern. She played in all 23 games for the Terps, tallying 22 goals. · The defense will have three new starters in 2012 after the departure of Katie Gallagher, Brittany Poist and Sara Cooper. Iliana Sanza, a second team all-region pick as a sophomore, is the lone returning starter for Maryland. While the unit will be young, don't expect it to be any less disciplined. Sanza will lead the back line as a junior and, along with four-year starter goalie Brittany Dipper, will do the majority of the organizing. · Dipper, the 2011 IWLCA National Goalie of the Year, is back for her final season in College Park. She has been tabbed to three straight ACC championship all-tournament teams while leading Maryland to conference titles in each season since her arrival. 2012 Season Preview Scouting The Tigers
· Andi Raymond leads Towson with 13 goals. Sarah Appelt is the Tigers' top point-getter, racking up 21 in 2012. · Kelly Custer has won the majority of the draws (19) for Towson. Alexa Demski boasts 26 groundballs and is one of only two players with double-digit groundballs this season. The Tigers have a solid goalkeeper in Mary Teeters. Teeters has recorded 73 saves while surrendering 59 goals. · Maryland trumped the Tigers 17-8 last season at Towson. Karri Ellen Johnson and Katie Schwarzmann combined for eight goals in the match. It would later prove to be Johnson's final game in 2011.

Kristy Black and Alex Aust registered two goals apiece. #4 Terps Cruise Past Stony Brook Tuesday ·Aust led a dominant and inclusive Terrapin offense that boasted goals from nine different players. Katie Schwarzmann and Brooke Griffin added four and three goals, respectively. Of Maryland's 21 goals on the day, 10 were assisted. Johnson Nabs ACC Offensive Weekly Honor · Johnson, of Annapolis, Md., accumulated six goals, eight draw controls and an assist in Maryland's two victories on the week. With a pair of goals against Richmond on Tuesday, Johnson became only the third player in Maryland women's lacrosse history to record 200 career goals. Hat Trick Katie · Schwarzmann currently ranks third in the ACC in goals per game (3.00). She is eighth in the NCAA in total goals. Stout Second Half Leads #5 Terps Past #14 BC · Karri Ellen Johnson and Kelly McPartland led all Maryland scorers with four goals. Junior Katie Schwarzmann picked up a hat trick as the attack tallied more than 15 goals for the second straight game. New Game, Same Starters · Terp starters include freshmen Brooke Griffin, Kelly McPartland, Shanna Brady and Megan Douty. #6 Syrcause Halts Terps Home Winning Streak · Despite holding a distinct advantage in nearly every statistical category including shots in which it trumped the Orange 30-20, Maryland picked up its second loss this season. It was the first regular season loss at home in head coach Cathy Reese's six-year tenure. · Sophomore Beth Glaros led Maryland with a hat trick and four draw controls. Katie Schwarzmann and Karri Ellen Johnson added two goals apiece. Brittany Dipper racked up eight saves in the cage. Johnson Resumes Record Book Climb · Fans will want to keep tabs on Johnson as she looks to continue her climb in the Maryland record books. The Annapolis, Md., native is now in sole possession of third on Maryland's career goals list (210). She needs 10 goals to pass Kelly Coppedge for the No. 2 spot. By the Numbers Glaros Shines Against Nation's Toughest Defenses · The sophomore, who boasted a then-career high four goals against Northwestern in last season's national title match, scored four goals against No. 5 Duke and led Maryland with three against No. 6 Syracuse. Schwarzmann Nabs ACC Offensive Weekly Honors · Schwarzmann scored six goals and tallied two assists on the week, including a hat trick against No. 6 Virginia. The junior from Sykesville, Md., also racked up two draw controls and caused a turnover to pace the Terps to their first ACC win of the year. One Terp vs. One Team · Brooke Griffin tallied five goals against Delaware in a 21-4 rout of the Hens. Katie Schwarzmann scored six goals at No. 17 Penn State in a 16-6 victory on the road. Hat Tricks Aplenty in Win vs. No. 6 Virginia · Maryland clearly shifted its focus to winning the draw in the second half, besting the Cavaliers 10-5 in the category including several key draws down the stretch after Virginia shrunk the Terrapin lead to 8-7 with 13:12 remaining. A 3-0 run with goals from McPartland, Schwarzmann and Alex Aust in-and-around the five minute mark gave the Terps a comfortable lead for the remainder of the match. Sanza Nets ACC Weekly Honor · The Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List nominee racked up eight draw controls over two games, while also tallying four groundballs and a caused turnover. Milestones Galore in Delaware Win ·Head coach and former Terrapin All-American Cathy Reese won her 100th career game at Maryland and senior attacker Karri Ellen Johnson scored career goal No. 188 to move into sole possession of third on the Terps' all-time goals list. Terps Trounce Tribe to Kick off 2012 Season · Maryland kicked off the 2012 campaign with nine unanswered goals and cruised to a 19-8 win against William & Mary at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. · Junior Katie Schwarzmann led the way for Maryland with five goals and also tallied three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Redshirt freshman Brooke Griffin shined in her Terrapin debut with a four-goal showing. Lacrosse Magazine Previews 2012 Terps Protect This House · Maryland is 56-2 at home under head coach Cathy Reese. · The Terps have won all five games in which they have played an opponent ranked No. 1 or 2 at home in the past five seasons. The Terps are 196-16 in College Park dating back to 1990 with 13 perfect seasons in that span. Four Terps Tabbed to Tewaaraton Watch List · Four Maryland players were named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Watch List, the early compilation of players who will be under consideration for college lacrosse's highest individual honor. · The Terps boasted more Tewaaraton nominees than any other program in the nation. Brittany Dipper, Karri Ellen Johnson, Iliana Sanza and Katie Schwarzmann were tabbed to this year's list. All four were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-Americans earlier this season. High Octane Offense · Katie Schwarzmann leads the Terps with 35 goals. Seven Terps boast double-digit goals this season, six have tallied 18 or more scores. Three's Company · Maryland topped North Carolina 12-7 last season to capture its third consecutive ACC championship. · Then-senior Laura Merrifield was named Most Valuable Player. Current Terps Brittany Dipper and Katie Schwarzmann were tabbed to the all-tournament team. New-look Defense · Sanza was named an IL Preseason All-American after garnering all-region honors in 2011. She teams up with freshmen Megan Douty and Shanna Brady and junior Melissa Diepold to form Maryland's defensive four. Maryland has surrendered only 37 goals in the first half this season.
