#1 Terps Cap Homestand vs. #7 Penn State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Led by Alex Aust - the reigning Terp of the Week - No. 1 Maryland caps a three-game homestand Saturday against No. 7 Penn State at noon. Aust, the Nike National and ACC Offensive Player of the Week, tallied a career-best 11 points including a school-record seven assists in a 17-10 win against UMBC Tuesday night. The Terps are outscoring opponents 105-55 this season. Penn State (4-1) is averaging 14.6 goals per game and picked up a marquee win at Virginia last weekend. Following Saturday's game at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, the Terps hit the road for games at Boston College, Stony Brook and William & Mary. Event Multimedia

· The Terps will have a mix of midfielders and attackers on the attack this season and the unit will be led by senior All-American Alex Aust. Aust was tremendous down the stretch for Maryland, including an epic performance in the ACC tournament. The Sterling, Va., native was the team leader in assists (52) and points (96) and will be called upon to be the main distributor again in 2013. · Maryland's deepest position is certainly the midfield where it returns eight players from last year's squad including all-everything Schwarzmann, who spent the majority of the offseason training with the U.S. women's national team in preparation for the 2013 FIL World Cup. · The Maryland defense will be led by reigning IWLCA National Defender of the Year Iliana Sanza. Sanza stepped out of the shadow in her junior campaign to lead a youth-laden defense back to the final four. · The Terps will have a large void to fill in the cage after the graduation of four-year starter Brittany Dipper. · The Nittany Lions are outscoring opponents 73-50 through the first five games. PSU narrowly avoided an upset in its last game against James Madison, winning 13-12. · Maggie McCormick leads the offense with 12 goals and 14 assists. Mackenzie Cyr (12) is the only other Nittany Lion with double-digit goals. · Katie Schwarzmann racked up a then-career high six goals to lead Maryland past Penn State 16-6 last season on the road.
Poll Central Maryland Drops UMBC 17-10 · Katie Schwarzmann added five points on three goals and two assists and combined with freshman Taylor Cummings to record 12 draw controls as the Terps dominated the critical category 21-8. Quick Shooters · Three times the Terps have scored within the first 45 seconds of the game, including twice with less than 20 seconds elapsed. Aust Racks up ACC, National Honors · Aust racked up 19 points in two games to help No. 1 Maryland stay perfect in 2013. The senior tallied five goals and five assists as the Terrapins defeated No. 6 Virginia 18-10 on the road Friday for their third-straight win over a top-10 foe. The 10-point total is tied for the third highest in Maryland single-game history. Terps Rout #6 Virginia on the Road ·Aust tallied five goals and five assists - tying the third-highest point total in Terrapin single-game history - as Maryland dropped its third straight top-10 ranked foe. Sophomore Kristen Lamon added a career-best four goals. ·The Terps have now scored 15 or more goals in each of their four games this season. Taylor Cummings boasted a team-high seven draw controls as Maryland picked up its seventh straight win over the Cavaliers. Aust-some! · The senior has 193 points in her career and her 97 assists rank eighth all-time in Maryland career annals. · She nearly beat her freshman point total (9g, 3a) versus UMBC alone (4g, 7a) this season. She has more points through six games in 2013 (43) than she did her entire sophomore season (42). Road Warriors · The Terps are averaging 19 goals a game on the road and 16 in College Park heading into Saturday's game against Penn State. Terps Drop #4 Duke in Home Opener ·The Terps were sparked by a 9-2 first-half advantage and ended the home opener with five unanswered goals to stay unbeaten in 2013. In addition to Griffin, Katie Schwarzmann, Alex Aust, Taylor Cummings, and Beth Glaros each added two goals to lead the offense. Griffin Named ACC Player of the Week · Griffin, a redshirt sophomore from Annapolis, Md., tallied a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to help the Terps remain perfect in 2013 and drop its second-consecutive top-five ranked opponent. Maryland Cruises at #2 Syracuse · Katie Schwarzmann tallied a career-high seven goals to lead Maryland to another dominant offensive performance. Freshman Taylor Cummings added five goals and a game-high six draw controls. Alex Aust boasted her second four-goal showing of the year. Schwarzmann Has a Day in the Dome · The midfielder is now tied for fourth all-time in career goals with 187. She's averaging nearly a hat trick per game for the top-ranked Terps. Howard at Home in Cage · The first year starter has allowed 46 goals while tallying 41 saves in 2013. She's recorded double-digit saves twice. Terps Sweep ACC Weekly Awards · Schwarzmann was also named Nike National Player of the Week. Four Terps Land on Tewaaraton Watch List · Both lists will be narrowed to 25 men's and women's nominees in late April. In mid-May, five men's and five women's finalists will be announced. These finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for the 13th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, May 30 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. 2013 - The Year of the Senior · The class is led by returning IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year Katie Schwarzmann and IWLCA National Defender of the Year Iliana Sanza. · Other returning senior starters include Alex Aust and Melissa Diepold. Three Terps Named IL Preseason All-Americans · Schwarzmann scored in every game in 2012 and led the Terps with 72 goals, the fifth-highest mark in single-season history at Maryland. · Sanza started every game for the nation's fourth-ranked defense. She led the Terrapins in ground balls and caused turnovers and was third in draw controls. Against ACC opponents, Sanza tallied 11 ground balls, 10 draw controls, and 11 caused turnovers. · Aust had a breakout campaign in 2012. She racked up five or more points in 10 games in 2012 and was the Terrapin leader in assists (52) and points (96). She's BACK! · The two-time captain hopes to lead the Terps back to the final four for a fifth straight season and bring the national championship back to College Park for the first time since her rookie season in 2010. Terps and Team USA - A Winning Combination · Schwarzmann, a senior midfielder and the reigning Tewaaraton winner, is one of only two current collegiate players on the roster, joining Danielle Etrasco from Boston. · McFadden, a former Tewaaraton winner and current assistant coach with the Terps, was a midfielder on the 2009 national team which won gold in Prague. · Sophomore Kelly McPartland also spent extensive time with the national team this offseason. Defense Remains Intact · Led by reigning IWLCA National Defender of the Year Iliana Sanza, the Terps will hope to jump start one of the top offenses in the country again this season. · Also returning is senior Melissa Diepold and sophomores Megan Douty and Shanna Brady.
