COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland women's lacrosse players Caitlyn McFadden (United States), Sarah Mollison (Australia) and Laura Merrifield (England) have all been selected to compete for their native countries in this summer's 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup in Prague.
McFadden, a junior, boasted All-American honors as a sophomore and is one of six current collegiate players to be named to the U.S. team. The junior from Phoenix, Md., tallied 27 goals and 27 assists a year ago.
Mollison, a sophomore from Melbourne, was one of the youngest members of the 2005 Australian World Cup team that won the championship. Mollison has won seven Australian championships as a member of the U-21 and U-17 Victorian junior national teams. As a Terrapin, the midfielder racked up eight goals and six assists in her rookie campaign in 2008. She also tallied seven groundballs and a pair of draw controls in 18 games played.
Merrifield, a sophomore from Hertfordshire, played in 17 contests last season. The midfielder notched 10 goals and one assist with two draw controls and six caused turnovers. She was a member of the U-19 All-World Team and a co-captain of the U-19 England squad.
"We are so proud of Caitlyn, Sarah and Laura, and excited for them to represent their countries in the World Cup," head coach Cathy Reese said. "It is certainly a tribute to their hard work and dedication."
The World Cup kicks off June 17 and runs until June 27 in the Czech Republic.
