Women's Lacrosse Holds on to Beat Penn State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland senior Cathy Nelson scored a career-high six goals and freshman Quinn Carney added two as the third-ranked Maryland Terrapins defeated Penn State, 14-10, at Ludwig Field Saturday night. Nelsons six goals tonight moved her into ninth place in the Maryland career goals chart with a 128 total goals in 74 career games.
Nelson would strike first 26 seconds into the contest, and the Terrapins jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, controlling the Penn State attack for nearly 12 minutes before allowing the Nittany Lions Summer Downing to score at the 9:40 mark. Nelson would score twice more at the 17 and 14 minute marks, respectively. However, Penn State would score at the 7 and 3 minute marks to cut the Terpss lead to 8-6 at the half.
The Terrapins opened the second half scoring two quick goals both from Nelson and the Maryland defense played pressure defense, stalling the Lion attack for five minutes before Julie Tice would get them on the scoreboard. Nelson would score her sixth and final goal at the 12 minute mark off an assist from Noelle Mitchell. Penn State would then halt the high-powered Maryland attack unit, not allowing a goal for nearly nine minutes. Kristin Sommar would score the Terps final goal at the 3:44 mark.
In goal, Marylands Alex Kahoe charted 16 saves, marking her second-best effort of the season. Penn States Lauren Retzlaff recorded seven saves.
Maryland improves to 13-3 overall while Penn State falls to 7-8. The Terps next travel to Princeton on Wednesday, April 29 for a 7:30 matchup with the Tigers.
