April 11, 2012
PRINCETON, N.J. - Alex Aust recorded a career-high 10 points, including a school-record six assists, as #4 Maryland cruised past #18 Princeton 15-9 Wednesday.
Aust led Maryland (12-3, 2-2 ACC) in goals with four and was backed up by a trio of hat tricks from Katie Schwarzmann, Kelly McPartland and Kristy Black. Brooke Griffin tallied four points on a goal and three assists.
Maryland erased an early 3-1 deficit with a stout 11-0 run that capped the first half and kicked off the second. After a disappointing first half at North Carolina last Saturday, the Terps ended the stanza on a mission Wednesday, tallying seven unanswered goals to end the period.
Brittany Dipper led the defense with 11 saves in the cage, including six in the decisive first half. Maryland was a perfect 14-for-14 in clears and dominated the ground balls 17-11. Reserve defender Annie Farrell paced the Terps with three draw controls.
Aust's six assists in the contest matched her previous output at Penn two weeks ago. The junior attacker is averaging 6.5 points per game in Maryland's last six outings.
"I am really proud of the way our team played today coming off of Saturday's game," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We saw a lot of players, including Alex Aust, step up and take control against a very strong Princeton team."
The Terps return home with an important conference game against Virginia Tech at noon Saturday at Ludwig Field.
