Women's Lacrosse Erupt in Season Home Opener
March 14, 1998 COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Freshman attack Jen Adams scored a career-high four goals as the No. 5-ranked Maryland Terrapins opened the 1998 home season with a convincing 21-7 victory over Syracuse. Adams was one of eight different Maryland goal scorers on the afternoon. After leading 14-3 at the half, the Terps ran off seven more goals in the final 25 minutes of play. Maryland dominated every statistical category, including a 35 to 25 edge in shots and a 23 to 13 advantage in ground balls. Other multiple goal scorers for Maryland included senior attack midfielder Sascha Newmarch, senior attack Noelle Mitchell, freshmen Meredith Egan and Quinn Carney and sophomore Christie Jenkins. Newmarch also added three assists. Sophomore Kristin Sommar opened the scoring two minutes into the game with an unassisted goal. The Terps would score eight more goals before the Orangewomen were on the scoreboard. Syracuse posted its first goal in school history at the 16:20 mark in the first half when Kristen Langenmayr scored an unassisted goal. The Orange would score two more times before the half. Sophomore Jenna Szyluk and freshman Katrina Hable each scored two goals apiece to lead Syracuse, while Langenmayr, Lauren Brady and Erica Hofmann each notched one. In goal for Maryland, sophomore Alex Kahoe recorded 13 saves. Other scorers for the Terps included Cathy Nelson and Meghan McNamara. Nelson also had three assists. Maryland improves to 1-2 on the season, while Syracuse falls to 0-1 in its first year of women's lacrosse. The Terrapins will next host fourth-ranked Virginia on Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m. Today's game marked the beginning of a seven-game homestand for the Terps.
