Maryland Gymnastics Offers Summer Clinic
June 12, 2009
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland gymnastics program is proud to offer its 2009 Maryland Gymnastics Clinic this summer featuring instruction and expertise from the team's coaching staff and gymnasts. The two-day camp is open to competitive and recreational gymnasts ages seven and up and will be held the weekend of August 15-16 in the Maryland Gymnastics Training Facility.
The 2009 Maryland Gymnastics Clinic is designed to teach campers the fundamentals of gymnastics in a fun manner by catering to the individual needs of each participant. Running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, the clinic consists of morning and afternoon sessions and includes daily rotations on vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and trampoline. Strength, dance and flexibility components also are incorporated as part of the camp.
"Sharing our passion for gymnastics with young people is an extremely rewarding experience for our coaching staff and gymnasts," assistant coach Vicki Chliszczyk said. "Whether you are an established or an aspiring gymnast, we believe this clinic will be enjoyable and beneficial for anyone with an interest in our sport."
Located in the Maryland Gymnastics Training Facility at the University of Maryland's School of Public Health, the clinic features an on-campus, full-service gymnasium with high quality collegiate gymnastics equipment. All participants in the camp will receive a complimentary Maryland Gymnastics Under Armour T-shirt. Holiday Inn College Park will serve as the host hotel for the clinic, and a block of rooms has been reserved there for campers at the group rate.
The Terrapins are coming off a memorable 2009 season that concluded in April. Under the guidance of retiring head coach Bob Nelligan, coach-in-waiting Brett Nelligan and Chliszczyk, Maryland secured a berth in the National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships, earned its first Top 25 national ranking since 2005 and posted its best team score (195.100) in nearly four years during the recently-completed season.
