Fifteen Maryland gymnasts are among the ninety-six student-athletes named to the East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) All-Academic team, announced today by the EAGL Sports Information Office.
Maryland has the highest total of student-athletes named to the 2007 EAGL All-Academic team. Rutgers and West Virginia tied for having the second highest total of honorees; they both placed 14 gymnasts on the team.
In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the two previous semesters. Freshmen are also eligible, if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
"It is very important that we start each year off with strong academic achievements," said head coach Bob Nelligan. "Placing 15 members on this team reflects on how we recruit. It also shows how our coaching staff is committed to our student-athletes in their pursuit of a quality education."
Senior Ashley LeVine is a four-time member of the EAGL All-Academic team.
Three-time members include junior Lindsey Bonomo (Bel Air, Md.), junior Morgan Fishbein (Greenland, N.H.), junior Gretchen Kittelberger (Webster, N.Y.) and senior Marisa St. Louis.
Senior Angela Ferg (Bel Air, Md.), sophomore Kim Loew (Allentown, Pa.) and sophomore Kelsey Nelligan qualified for their second time.
Freshman Michele Brenner (New City, N.Y.), senior Rachel Colon (Brightwaters, N.Y.), freshman Allison Dama (Lansing, Mich.), freshman Brandi George (Orlando, Fla.), freshman Margaux Meeks (Winter Garden, Fla.), freshman Talia Tossone (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Lindsey Willner (Holbrook, N.Y.) are first-year team members.
Maryland placed eleven student-athletes on the 2006 EAGL All-Academic team.
