The Maryland gymnastics team scored a 191.400 for fourth place in a quad meet against West Virginia, North Carolina and host Kentucky on Friday, January 26 at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Ky.
No. 20 Kentucky won with a 193.775 total score. No. 17 West Virginia turned in 192.875 for second while No. 37 North Carolina notched a 192.000 for third. Although the Terps had some mistakes throughout the night, they held their composure together and scored over two points higher than last week's 189.375 score at Pittsburgh.
The Terrapins began the night on floor with falls from the first two competitors, Angela Ferg and Talia Tossone. Freshman Michele Brenner put the team back on track and the remaining gymnasts hit their routines, giving the Terps the highest floor total (47.600).
In the second rotation on vault, the team tallied a 48.050. Freshman Brandi George and senior Angela Ferg tied for the team's highest score, 9.775.
The team put it together on uneven bars and hit all of the routines. The event total of 48.225 was the Terp's highest event score. Freshman Allie Dama turned in the team's highest score for the third week in a row with a 9.750.
On balance beam in the final rotation, the team suffered two falls from Rachel Colon and Michele Brenner. However, the final three gymnasts solidly hit their routines to give the Terps a 47.525. Anchor George nailed her highly difficult routine, but only received a 9.650.
George had an excellent competition. She placed second in the all-around (38.850) to West Virginia's standout, Janae Cox. North Carolina's freshman Christine Nguyen finished third (38.725).
Kentucky notched the highest event totals on the vault (49.025), uneven bars (48.625) and balance beam (48.700).
Kentucky's Krystle Cook won vault (9.900). Kentucky's Lucy Burgin along with West Virginia's Cox and Mehgan Morris shared first on uneven bars (9.825). Kentucky's Emily Green, UNC's Christine Nguyen and Cox all scored 9.825 for first on the balance beam. Kentucky's Heather Hite won floor, 9.825.
The Terps hit the road next Friday for the third week in a row. The team will compete in the Governor's Cup in Raleigh, N.C. against Towson University, North Carolina and host NC State.
