Women's Gymnastics Posts Season-High Team ScoreFinishes second out of four teams.
Feb. 24, 1998 Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., the Terrapin women's gymnastics team scored a season-high 192.050 team score and posted a season-high 48.525 on vault. However, they could not overcome a strong George Washington University team, which took first overall with a score of 194.150 before a home crowd. Rounding out the field was Radford University (188.500) and Eastern Michigan University (187.700). For the second consecutive meet, Maryland displayed a team effort with several gymnasts contributing in all events. On vault, Maryland's season-high score was aided by individual season-highs from five of the six competitors and top-five finishes from three of the gymnasts. Sophomore Ashly Albert (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair), competing in just her second meet of the season, scored a season-high 9.750, placing her in a tie for first overall with senior Megyn Byrnes (Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac) whose score of 9.750 was also a season-high. Sophomore Shelly Hernandez (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair) took fourth with a season-high 9.725. On bars, Maryland again placed three gymnasts in the top five overall. Sophomore Rachel Dolbin (Pottsville, Pa. / Pottsville) led the Terps by tying her season-high with a score of 9.775 which placed her third. Megyn Byrnes placed fourth with a 9.750 and senior Alexis Moran (Minersville, Pa. / Minersville) finished fifth with a season-high score of 9.725. Sophomore Elize Burke (Bowdoinham, Me. / Mt. Ararat) competed in her first meet of the season and scored a season-high 9.750 on beam to give her a tie for fourth place with teammate freshman Jodi Morgan (East Petersburg, Pa. / Hempfield) who also set a season-high with her score of 9.750. On floor, junior Jenny Engel (Monrovia, Md. / Linganore) broke her season-high score, which she set this past weekend at the Towson Invitational, by posting a 9.775, placing her second overall. Megyn Byrnes continued her consistent performance in the all-around by finishing third with a score of 38.100 This was the second time this year that Maryland had faced both George Washington and Radford. The Terrapin's last meeting against the Colonials came this past weekend at the Towson Invitational where the Terps defeated George Washington, 190.925 - 190.100. Earlier this month, Maryland defeated Radford, 190.725 - 186.600. Maryland improves to 14-6 overall and will now travel to Southampton, Bermuda to compete in the Bermuda Invitational against EAGL rivals Towson and No. 27 New Hampshire.
