The Maryland gymnastics team placed fourth in a quad meet against Michigan State, West Virginia University and host University of Pittsburgh on Friday, January 19th at the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.
On their first away meet, Maryland struggled as they tallied a 189.375. West Virginia won with a team total of 193.150, Michigan State turned in a 192.150 for second and Pitt finished third with a 190.725. The Terps' season record is now 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League.
Maryland began on beam earning an event total of 48.150. After falling last week in the season opener co-captains Angela Ferg and Rachel Colon came back and hit their routines with scores of 9.675 and 9.75. Junior Gretchen Kittelberger and freshman Brandi George fell causing the Terps to count a low score.
The Terps had a tough time in the second rotation on the floor exercise and experienced a few falls. George turned in the highest score with a 9.675. Ferg and junior Morgan Fishbein tied for the Terps' second highest score, both scoring a 9.450.
On vault, Maryland's last two competitors, George and Ferg, turned in a pair of solid full-twisting Yurchenko vaults, scoring 9.750 and 9.850. Ferg tied for first place with Michigan State's Rochelle Robinson.
In the final rotation, Maryland turned in a 47.250 on the uneven bars. Freshman Allison Dama earned the team's highest score for the second week in a row, scoring a 9.750.
West Virginia's Janae Cox won the all-around with a score of 38.900. Maryland's only all-arounder, Brandi George, placed fifth with a 38.350. Other event winners included Michigan State's Robinson on the uneven bars (9.850) and Pitt's Victoria McGuigan on floor (9.800). Michigan State's Nicole Curler and Katlyn Roggensack shared first place on beam (9.775).
The Terps travel again next Friday to Lexington, Ky. for another quad meet at 7:00 p.m. against North Carolina, West Virginia and host Kentucky.
