Terp Golfers Qualify for U.S. Women's Amateur

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland golfers Kelly MacWhinnie and Katie Trotter each earned a spot in the upcoming 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship with their finishes recently in sectional qualifying events.

MacWhinnie, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pa., finished in a tie for fourth with a 73 in a qualifier on July 6 in Lexington, N.C. MacWhinnie was one of 12 players to qualify from the event at the Sapona Country Club.

Trotter, an upcoming sophomore from Pittsburgh, Pa., shot a 76 to tie for second at a qualifier at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Pittsburgh. She was among the seven qualifiers from that sectional.

The 105th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, conducted by the U.S. Golf Association, will be held August 1 through 7 in Roswell, Ga. There will be 156 players in the field, with the top 64 after 36 holes advancing to match play.
