MacWhinnie Reaches Flight Final at WSGA Amateur
June 12, 2006 PINEHURST, N.C. - Kelly MacWhinnie of the University of Maryland advanced to the final of the third flight last week at the 91st Women's Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship held at the Country Club of North Carolina. MacWhinnie, a senior-to-be from Pittsburgh, Pa., lost in the third-flight final to Nancy Smith, an amateur player from North Port, Fla., losing 2-and-1 in the final. She had won her first three pairings in match play, including a win over Tanna Lee Richard from Fort Smith, Ark., in the semifinal that took two extra holes to decide. MacWhinnie shot an 84 in the qualifying round. Kelly Calkin, a rising junior from St. Charles, Ill., qualified for the first flight after shooting a 79 in the opening round. She then advanced to the semifinal before losing to Alexis Rather, of Tupelo, Miss., 5-and-3, in the semis. Katie Trotter, a rising junior from Pittsburgh, Pa., fired a 73 in the qualifying round to enter the championship flight. She lost her two pairings in match play, losing to Garrett Phillips of Augusta State, 2-up, in a first-round match.
