Terps Open Spring Season with Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge
Feb. 23, 2013
MIAMI LAKES, Fla. - The Maryland women's golf team will open its spring season when it hosts the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge starting Monday, Feb. 25.
The Terps are one of 16 teams competing in the 54-hole tournament, which will be held at Shula's Golf club in Miami Lakes, Florida. Live stats for the tournament can be found at www.golfstatresults.com.
This two-day contest is the first and only event Maryland will host this season. The Terps return to the links after a solid fall season that featured a first place finish at the Lady Pirate Invitational and a fourth place finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Senior Christine Shimel will look to lead the Terps as the teams most experienced golfer. Shimel held a scoring average of 73.23 through 5 fall events, which ranked third in the ACC, and shot a season-low 217 (+1) at the Palmetto Intercollegiate. Also returning for the Terps is sophomore Juliet Vongphoumy, who finished last spring as an All-ACC selection. Vongphoumy captured an individual victory at the Lady Pirate Invitational in October, shooting a (-4) for the tournament.
Maryland also looks to get solid contributions from junior Emily Gimpel and freshman Heidi Baek. Both shot low rounds of 225 last fall, and Baek had a season best finish at the UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament (tied for ninth). Sophomore transfer Kendall Dusenberry hopes to make an impact this season after competing in four tournaments last fall with a scoring average of 81.58.
Shimel, Vongphoumy, Gimpel, Baek and Dusenberry will represent the Terps in the tournament, while Jessica Gregory will compete as an individual.
Other teams participating include East Tennessee, #20 NC State, Miami, Louisville, FIU, Jacksonville University, Kansas, Memphis, Missouri, Xavier, Arkansas State, Cincinnati, Mercer, Illinois State, and UMKC (Rankings from GolfStat Top-25, February 2013).
