KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Junior Hayley Brown carded a career-best 67 in the final round to help move the Maryland women's golf team into second place at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Oak Point Golf Club Monday. As a team, the Terps fired an even-par 288 in the final round, their lowest of the season, and finished the fall with three top-3 finishes including two team championships.
"As a team, we had our best round of the season today so I am really happy with that," said assistant coach Tiffany Prats. "We found ourselves 11 shots back after the second round, but the girls came out and fought hard to make a move."
Brown entered play today tied for 22nd. After completing the second round this morning with a 2-over 74, Brown climbed 15 spots on the leaderboard to finish seventh with a 3-over 219.
"Hayley carded her career-best round today which included eight birdies," said Prats. "This is huge for her and a great way to end the fall season. She came out today ready to play and it showed."
Freshman Emily Gimpel completed her lowest 54-hole round of her career. Gimpel fired a 3-over 75 to finish with a 225 (73-77-75) and tied for 23rd. Junior Christine Shimel tied for 27th with a 226 (73-74-79).
"This season started off rocky, but we came back with two wins and a second," said Prats. "The girls have worked really hard and it is starting to show. We will be working hard this off season to get even better for the spring season."
UNC Greensboro won the team title with an 875, and the Spartans' Fanny Cnops won the individual championship with a 209 (70-72-67).
