Terrapins Win Spider Invitational
Oct. 13, 2009 MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - The University of Maryland women's golf team shot 299 Tuesday afternoon in the final round of the Spider Invitational at Independence Golf Club to win the tournament for the third straight year. Led by junior Kerri Connolly's even-par 72 final round, the Terps erased a one-stroke deficit to Longwood to win by seven strokes. The Team shot 11 over par, overall. Connolly finished 3 over par for the tournament and finished in third place, only one stroke shy of first. Defending medalist Jessica Hollandsworth finished sixth, shooting 4 over par on the day and 5 over par for the tournament. Freshman Christine Shimel gave Maryland three top-10 finishers, carding a 3-over-par 75 on the day to finish 8 over par for the tournament. Freshman Hayley Brown shot 4 over par Tuesday and 10 over both days to complete Maryland's counted scores, finishing in a tie for 16th place. Sophomore Lauren Varnas shot a 7-over-par 79 both days to finish 14 over par and tie for 28th place. Richmond's Caroline Lovette defeated Longwood's Kameron Carter on the first playoff hole to win individual medalist honors. Maryland is back in action next week at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, hosted by East Carolina. TEAM SCORES
