Stepanek Second at Taco Bell Golf Tourney

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Kate Stepanek shot three straight rounds of 1-under-par 71 to finish second individually Tuesday at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate women's golf tournament hosted by East Carolina University. Stepanek's 54-hole total of 213 was one stroke behind Garrett Phillips of Augusta State, who birdied three of her final four holes to overtake Stepanek for medalist honors. Phillips finished with a 69 on Tuesday to come in at 4-under 212 for the tournament. Maryland had a pair of top-20 finishes individually, as sophomore Jessica Reno finished in a tie for 13th at 222 after a final-round 73. She opened with a 72 in the tournament, played on the par-72 Bradford Creek course. As a team, Maryland placed fourth at 891, finishing with a score of 295 on Tuesday. The Terrapins' best round of the event was a 294 shot in Monday's opening 18 holes. Augusta State shot an 869 to win the team event by seven shots over Coastal Carolina. East Carolina was third at 883. Also for Maryland, freshman Katie Trotter tied for 32nd at 226 after a final-round 76. Kelly Calkin was 43rd at 230 with Tuesday's 75 marking her best round of the tournament, and Kelly MacWhinnie shot 237 for the tournament to tie for 58th.
