Stepanek Sparks Terps to 8th-Place Finish

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore Kate Stepanek fired a final-round 77 on Tuesday, tying for seventh place individually and leading the University of Maryland to an eighth-place team finish at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational women's golf tournament. Stepanek finished with a 54-hole total of 229, having opened Monday's first of two rounds with an even-par 72. Sophomore Jessica Reno also earned a top-20 individual finish for the Terrapins, tying for 11th at 233 after taking advantage of a 75 in Monday's second round. Also for Maryland, Katie Trotter tied for 36th at 239, sophomore Kelly MacWhinnie scored 245 to tie for 52nd place and Kelly Calkin fired a 78 Tuesday to finish at 246, tying for 54th. As a team, the Terrapins shot 315 on the final day, dropping one place in the team standings after Campbell shot the best team round of Tuesday with a 304. Georgia State won the team competition with a 914 total on the par-72 layout at River Landing CC. Host UNC Wilmington was second at 921. Individually, Morgan Olds of Elon closed with a 72 on Tuesday to score a 222 total and win the medalist honors by one shot over Erica Wein of Georgia State.
