March 9, 2012
ORANGE PARK, Fla. - Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy carded a 1-under 71 to lead the Maryland women's golf team to a fourth-place finish after the first round of the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational at the Eagle Landing Golf Club on Friday.
The Terps placed three golfers in the top 15 after the first day which is tied for the most among the 16-team field.
"We got off to a solid start today, said Director of Intercollegiate Golf Jason Rodenhaver. "We lost a few shots [on the back nine]. Hopefully, we can clean it up down the stretch and get all five golfers going tomorrow."
For Vongphoumy, her first round 71 is the fourth time this season she has fired at par or below. The Providence, R.I., native trails the leader, Kaylin Yost of Campbell, by four strokes entering play on Saturday.
Second round play will begin Saturday morning. USF is in first place after firing a 1-under 287 in the opening round.
