Stepanek Leads Terps in Spring Opener

MIAMI, Fla. - Sophomore Kate Stepanek finished in a tie for 29th individually and led the University of Maryland women's golf team to a tie for 10th Tuesday at the Miccosukee Women's Championship, hosted by Florida International University.

Stepanek shot rounds of 78, 78 and 80 on the par-73 course to finish with a 54-hole total of 236. She also led the team during the fall season in scoring average. Freshman Katie Trotter closed with identical rounds of 78 to finish at 238 and tie for 35th.

Also for the Terrapins, freshman Kelly Calkin tied for 51st with a 241 total after closing with an 80 on Tuesday. Kelly MacWhinnie, a Maryland sophomore, had a 79 Tuesday for her best round of the tournament, finishing at 242 and a tie for 53rd.

Jessica Reno did not play in the first two rounds due to an illness, but came back to fire an 85 on Tuesday. Sarah O'Neill, a transfer from the University of Richmond, played as an individual in the tournament and finished at 261.

Georgia State won the team title with a 914 after rallying for a final-round 296 on Tuesday. Washington State was second, eight shots back, with host Florida International in third at 923. Maryland finished with a 54-hole total of 957, tying Central Florida for that spot.

Hanna Hoch of Colorado won the individual title with a 3-over-par total of 222. Anastasia Kostina of Washington State finished second, two strokes back after shooting an even-par 73 on Tuesday.

Maryland next plays March 7-8 at the Edwin Watts / Pinehurst Challenge.
