Calkin, Terps Place Third in Opener

Feb. 20, 2007

MIAMI, Fla. - Junior Kelly Calkin finished third individually with a 54-hole total of 10-over-par 226 to lead the University of Maryland to a third-place team finish Tuesday at the Pat Bradley Women's Golf Championship hosted by Florida International University.

The tournament was the first on the Spring 2007 schedule for the Terrapins. It was played at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club.

Calkin, who was the leader after two rounds, fired a 78 on Tuesday. Florida International freshman Therese Wackenstedt fired a final-round 69, 3-under-par, to make up the ground and earn the medalist honor, finishing at 221. Amy Eneroth of Washington State placed second at 224.

Calkin's 71 in the second round on Monday and Wackenstedt's final-round 69 were the only subpar rounds in the tournament.

The Terrapins shot a 312 on the final day, remaining in third in the team standings with a 940 total. Washington State edged FIU by five shots to win the team title at 912, with the Cougars and Golden Panthers coming into the final round tied in the team standings.

Also for Maryland, Kelly MacWhinnie had the Terps' best round of the day with a 76 to tie for 14th place at 237, matching the score and placing of teammate Kate Stepanek. Jessica Reno rallied for a final-round 78 to give the Terps' four players in the top 20 with her tie for 19th at 240. Katie Trotter was 39th at 253.

Carla Wasienko, playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 30th at 246 after shooting a final-round 77.

Maryland plays next on March 5 and 6 at the Pinehurst Challenge.
