Scouting The Terps The defending national champion Maryland is ranked No. 4 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches poll released Tuesday. The Terrapins are coming off of their eighth national title and a 19-4 overall record last year.
The Terps (6-1, 1-0) rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat No. 18 Boston College 7-4 Friday night. Maryland rattled off seven straight goals for the win and was led by freshman Alyssa Parker's hat trick. Scouting The Demon Deacons Wake Forest is 3-4 overall this season and 0-1 in ACC play. The Demon Deacons are ranked No. 14 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches' poll.
The Terrapins own the all-time series 27-11 and have won the last seven straight meetings dating back to 2011. In their last meeting, the Terps won 5-0 in College Park last September. Maryland beat Wake Forest for the 2008 and 2006 NCAA titles. Play the Best Due to being in the toughest conferences in the nation, the Terrapins play one of the strongest schedules in the country. All six ACC schools are ranked in the top 20 preseason top 25 poll, with three in the top five and four in the top 10. To see the full poll, log on to NFHCA.org. The Terps will battle eight of the 16 teams that participated in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. So far, they are 3-1 vs. those teams. Maryland will play 10 of the teams ranked in the preseason top 25 in 11 regular season games and are 4-1 against them. Head Coach Missy Meharg The 2010 and 2011 NFHCA National Coach of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year, Missy Meharg returns for her 25th season at the helm of the successful Terrapin field hockey program. Her current career record is 438-107-9 (.799). Below is a breakdown of just a few of her highlights since she took the reins in 1988:
Seven-time National Champions Staff Updates The Terrapins welcome a newcomer and a returnee to the program in 2012. Marvin Bam joins as an assistant coach/technical director and Katie O'Donnell comes on board as a student assistant coach. Bam comes to College Park after playing and coaching professionally in South Africa and the United Kingdom. As a member of the the South African hockey team, Bam played in over 30 international tournaments and test series with the South African team, as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2006 and 2002 Men's World Cups. He has worked with six hockey clubs between the UK and South Africa as director and head coach. O'Donnell is the most decorated player in Maryland hockey history. The four-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year and four-time First Team All-American recently started for Team USA in the London Olympics. She led the Terps to two national titles (2008, 2010) and three ACC titles (2008, 2009, 2010) in her career in College Park. Oh Captain, My Captain Seniors Megan Frazer and Janessa Pope will serve as the Terrapins' captains for the 2012 season. Both have been on the Terps' 2010 and 2011 NCAA championship teams.
Frazer, a midfielder from Derry, Northern Ireland, is the 2011 Honda Sports Award winner, an All-American and was one of two team captains last season. Terps Picked to Win ACC Maryland was picked to win the ACC, as voted by the league's six head coaches. The Terrapins received three of the six first-place votes and 23 of 25 votes overall. The Terrapins have won nine overall ACC titles. Most recently, they won three straight from 2008, 2009 and 2010. Two Picked to All-ACC Team Two Terrapins were named to the 11-member Preseason All-ACC Team - Megan Frazer and Harriet Tibble. Both Frazer and Tibble were named to the Preseason All-ACC last season. Both made the All-ACC Team at the end of the year and were named NFHCA First Team All-Americans. Frazer will serve as team captain this fall and won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top player last year.
