BEIJING, China - Despite trailing early in the game, the U.S. women's field hockey team fought back to earn the 1-1 draw against Japan at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium. The Americans, which include three former Terrapin All-Americans, are still in contention for the medal rounds.

Former Terrapins Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.), Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) and Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), all veterans of the U.S. National Team, played significant roles in the match against the Japanese, who are ranked seventh in the nation. Rizzo attempted a shot in the game.

The U.S. trailed 1-0 in the first half and into the second, until the 58th minute when Kate Barber tallied the equalizer.

Back in the Olympics for the first time since 1996, the United States tied Argentina, 2-2, to open the competition. The Argentines are ranked No. 2 in the world. The Japanese entered the tournament ranked No. 5.

The U.S. faces returning champion Germany on Thursday, August 24 at the Olympic Green Field Hockey Stadium. The Germans lead Pool B with six points and two wins.
