Oct. 26, 1997 Women's Field Hockey Falls to North CarolinaCHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Senior Cindy Werley scored off a Kate Barker assist to lead the fourth-ranked Universoty of North Carolina field hockey team to a 4-3 overtime victory over Maryland at Navy Field. In addition to her game-winning goal, Werely scored two unassisted goals in the first half of the regulation, giving her a hat trick. Junior Nancy Pelligreen added a goal halfway through the second, tying the game at 3-3. Maryland was led by senior Lynsey McVicker who scored twice. Nadine Bennet and Marloes Platzek assisted McVicker on the second goal. Carla Tagliente scored Maryland's second gol off an assist by Jennifer Pratt, which tied the game 2-2 at halftime. Terrapin goalie Alana Eliwatt recorded 11 saves, while Carolina's Jana Winthrow recorded five.
