CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The fourth-seeded and third-ranked Maryland field hockey team advances to the semifinal game of the ACC Tournament after cruising to a 5-1 victory over fifth-seeded Virginia on Thursday night at the University Hall Turf Field. Five different Terps scored in the win.
Maryland outshot the Cavaliers, 22-7, to claim the easy win. The Terps scored three unanswered goals in a span of 2:37 to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Sophomore Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) opened the floodgates, scoring on a rebound, 14 minutes into the game.
Close to two minutes later, junior All-American Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) posted the Terps' second goal on a breakaway, followed by a unassisted sophomore Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) tally from the top of the circle. Barbieri's goal moves her into a tie for 10th place on Maryland's all-time career list. She has scored 42 goals in three seasons.
The Terps added to their lead 10 minutes later, making the score 4-0 at the half, as freshman Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) scored her 17th goal of the season off of a penalty corner. Junior Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) assisted on the play.
Maryland wasted no time adding to their lead after the break. Junior Anja Boettcher (Ingolstadt, Germany) intercepted the ball in the shooting circle and knocked in the Terps' fifth goal of the game.
At 50:34, Virginia's Alllie Flynn converted on a penalty corner score the Hoo's only goal.
Maryland's Tori Cano (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) made four saves in the game while the Cavaliers' Logan Carr posted 11. The Terps outcornered UVA, 7-4.
