Oct. 27, 2006
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Susie Rowe's two goals in the team's final regular-season game, led No. 1 Maryland field hockey to a 5-0 victory over Appalachian State and it's winningest regular season since 1999. The Terps await the announcement of the ACC Tournament bracket. The postseason event takes place in Chapel Hill, N.C., Nov. 2-5.
Having already wrapped up the ACC season, earning at least a share of the conference regular-season crown, the Terrapins (18-1) focused their attentions to their six seniors who were honored before the start of the game against the Mountaineers (1-16).
Seniors Kristina Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.), Megan Fox (Zionsville, Pa.), Paula Infante (Santiago, Chihle), Christina Restivo (Hereford, Md.), Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) and Emily Trycinski (Nazareth, Pa.) were playing in the final regular-season contest of their careers. With the win, the senior class has amassed an impressive 78-13 record, including three-straight trips to the national semifinals, an ACC tournament title, a conference regular-season title and an NCAA Championship.
Against the Mountaineers on Friday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, Maryland took care of business early. The Terps were up 2-0 within the first five minutes of the game. Infante tallied the game-winner on a penalty corner just over a minute into the contest. Fellow senior Trycinski get on the scoreboard for the team's second goal of the evening.
Another senior, Berber Rischen, rounded out the scoring in the first half to put Maryland in front, 3-0.
Before the game was over, Rowe (London, England) put th visiting Mountaineers away for good, scoring twice in the period.
The shut out is also Maryland's ninth of the season, while the 18-1 regular-season mark is tied for the best since 1999, the year the Terrapins won the NCAA and ACC titles.
