Seniors Lead #6 Maryland Past Rutgers, 3-1
Oct. 26, 2012
The Terrapins held the Scarlet Knights (8-10) to just two shots through nearly 60 minutes of play, until Rutgers scored late to make it a one-goal game. Rutgers head coach Meredith Long played at Maryland for Missy Meharg and was a member of the 2005 NCAA Championship team.
"It's very fitting that Fraz and Janessa scored our goals tonight," Meharg said. "Fraz and Janessa are playing their best hockey right now and there's not a better time to do that."
"It's great to see the energy and the pace. Rutgers is a much-improved team and it's nice to see Meredith Long come back and she had her Senior Night year here a few years ago. It's fitting all the way around to have a Maryland alum coaching here on this evening that we are celebrating these women."
Dennig found Pope on the left post for a 1-0 Terps advantage with 10:40 left in the first half. Three minutes later, Frazer got a stick on freshman Sarah Sprink's shot off a penalty corner for a 2-0 Maryland lead at halftime.
Rutgers (8-10) got on the board in the 62nd minute when Alyssa Bull scored off a penalty corner.
The Scarlet Knights won the ball back with just under a minute to play, but the Terrapins were able to win it back and take it the other way. Frazer dribbled in and struck a hard shot from the top of the circle for a 3-1 lead with 32 seconds left.
Maryland outshot Rutgers, 22-4, and had seven penalty corners to the Scarlet Knights' three.
Starting goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera tallied two saves off Rutgers' four shots.
This year's senior class has played in three Final Fours, three NCAA title games, won two ACC crowns and two NCAA championships. Collectively, they've won 78-10 record overall for a winning percentage of over 88 percent. In ACC play, they've gone 17-3 (.850).
Next, the Terrapins will await to learn their ACC Tournament opponent and game time, which will be announced Saturday. The ACC Tournament will be played in Chapel Hill, N.C., beginning next Thursday.
