Field Hockey Terps Rout Villanova, 5-1, on Senior Night
Oct. 26, 2007
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team handily defeated Villanova, 5-1, at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Friday evening. The contest was the Terps' final regular season game, as they head into the postseason with a 17-1 record.
"I'm really proud of the team," said 20th-year Maryland head coach Missy Meharg. "The leadership from the seniors this season has been exceptional. To have a 17-1 regular season record is really a tribute to their character."
"[Despite the steady rain], the field conditions were good and the team played well. I thought it was a very good, competitive game."
Senior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) shined in her final regular season home game as a Terp, scoring Maryland's first two tallies. In the 10th minute van Leeuwen netted a shot from the end line off of a successful penalty corner play with the assist coming from junior Ellen Ott (Schwenksville, Pa.).
Villanova's high scorer Lauren Wuzzardo retaliated three minutes later, driving in an unassisted goal from the top of the circle, evening the score, 1-1. But it did not take long for the Terps to reclaim the lead. Van Leeuwen went on to flick in an unassisted goal in the 15th minute, stepping in bounds on the penalty corner push out, putting the Terps up 2-1.
The score would stand until the second half, when Ott and junior Susie Rowe (London, England) put on an offensive show. Rowe assisted Ott in the 41st minute and followed up with a hard slap shot from the top of the circle for a goal of her own at 48:58. Ott clinched the win with 10 minutes left on the clock, knocking in a shot on a pass from freshman Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.)
Also playing in her final regular-season home game, senior goalkeeper Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) ended the game with four saves in less than 58 minutes of playing time, making a couple of dramatic saves to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
Fellow senior Kim Ziegler (Kingsville, Md.) was also recognized for Senior Night, making her first start of the season.
With the win, the 2007 seniors picked up their 82nd career victory, putting them second at Maryland among the senior classes, behind only last year's 83-win senior class.
The Terps await the official announcement of the ACC Tournament seedings and bracket. The tournament is slated for Nov. 1-4 on the Boston College campus in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
