COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-ranked Terrapin field hockey team held off No. 7 North Carolina in an exciting 1-0 game at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Sunday afternoon. The win guarantees the Terps at least a share of the regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title.

Maryland sophomore Susie Rowe (London, England) scored the game's only goal less than 10 minutes into the second half. Junior goalie Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) registered three saves in preserving the team's eighth shutout victory of the season.

The second half was full of scoring opportunities for the Terps (17-1, 4-1 ACC), as they fired 16 shots during the period. The team totaled 22 shots for the game, including seven by Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile), who put pressure on North Carolina goalie Brianna O'Donnell throughout the game.

Masson faced several Tar Heel (11-5, 1-4 ACC) attacks herself, including a frenetic sequence with less than five minutes to go in the second half in which she registered two straight saves. The Tar Heels registered nine shots on the game.

The win puts the Terps at the 17-win mark, a milestone they have achieved in each of the past eight seasons.

Maryland put the heat on O'Donnell early in the second half when they earned five penalty corners in quick succession, culminating with Rowe's goal after several good opportunities. Junior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) picked up her 25th point of the season when she assisted on Rowe's goal.

Maryland is back on the field on Friday, Oct. 27 when it hosts Appalachian State in the regular-season finale. The Terps will celebrate the careers of seniors Kristina Edmonds, Megan Fox, Paula Infante, Berber Rischen, Christina Restivo and Emily Trycinski with Senior Night prior to the start of the game.
