Terps Fall To Old Dominion In Norfolk, 1-0
Oct. 19, 2002
NORFOLK, Va. - For the fourth time in the last five meetings, the outcome between the Maryland field hockey team (13-2, 2-1 ACC) and the Old Dominion Monarchs (13-2, 6-0 CAA) was decided by one goal. The No. 3 Monarchs benefited from the lone goal on Saturday, defeating the top-ranked Terps, 1-0.
"I think in the last 17 minutes of the game, we started playing our brand of field hockey. The thing to take from this game is a need to play that way for 70 minutes," stated Terp head coach Missy Meharg. "I'm confident that our players will take that lesson out of this game and we will continue to improve throughout the season."
The first half of the game was hard-fought and physical as both squads attempted to build offensive pressure. The Terrapins were denied on four penalty corner opportunities and narrowly missed on a pair of fast break chances, while sophomore netminder Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) made two spectacular stops to keep the Monarchs at bay on the other end. In the eighth minute, a sprawling kick save by the second-year cager stopped a slapshot by ODU freshman Jennifer Angat, and in the 22nd minute Hearsey made a save with her blocker on a direct corner rocket by the nation's leading scorer, Tiffany Snow. The score was 0-0 at the break.
The Monarchs came out of the halftime huddle with intensity. After a shot by Rosalinda Banuelos narrowly missed the cage to the right, the Monarchs got the ball back and forced a penalty corner in the 36th minute. Monarch junior Angie Loy finished off a pass from Snow on an indirect option to give ODU the opening score at 37:00.
Both teams battled throughout the remainder of the second half, but the scoreboard didn't change. Hearsey made another fine save on a Monarch penalty corner opportunity and finished the game with four stops. The Terps battled valiantly toward the end of the half but Old Dominion's Marybeth Freeman made four saves as well to preserve the shutout - the first against the Terps all season.
The Terrapins return to College Park for a weekend homestand, hosting No. 12 North Carolina and No. 7 James Madison this Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 respectively. Maryland meets their league-rival Tar Heels at 1 p.m. on Saturday before facing the non-conference Dukes of JMU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
