#1 Terp Field Hockey Dominates Local Rival
Oct. 18, 2006
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Alexis Pappas' two goals led the top-ranked field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over No. 19 and local rival American on Wednesday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. It is the second game in a row at least four Terps have scored in a game.
Senior Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) broke the scoreless tie in the 12th minute to give the Terps a 1-0 lead. Rischen made her way through the AU defenders to the open spot in the shooting circle to take her shot.
Freshman Alexis Pappas (Mount Joy, Pa.) gave Maryland a two-goal cushion, also scoring from close range in the 15th minute, before American's Heidi Hershberger cut the advantage in half at 21:42.
The 2-1 score held up until halftime. After the break, however, the Terps tallied three more goals and kept the Eagles out of their offensive end for most of the half to pull away.
Pappas' career-high second goal of the game put Maryland in front, 3-1, at 45:17, with classmate Nicole Muracco (Sewell, N.J.) following close behind, just over a minute later.
Maryland allowed just four shots in each half to American, while the Terrapins had 12 in the second period alone and 20 for the game. The Terps also dominated in the penalty corners category, 8-2. Both of AU's corners were in the first half.
In the net, Allison Fayfich's seven saves were matched by Maryland's seven, registered by junior All-American Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) and redshirt-freshman Alicia Grater (Gilbertsville, Pa.).
Maryland remains at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex for its ACC finale against No. 6 North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 22. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Admission to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex and parking is free.
