#1 Field Hockey Shell-Shocks Great Danes, 6-0
Oct. 15, 2006
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - 2006 Honda Award winner Paula Infante scored twice in the Maryland field hockey's 6-0 victory over Albany on Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Four other Terrapins also scored in the win, as the team improved to 15-1 on the season.
In the first-ever meeting between the teams, Maryland jumped on the Great Danes (11-5) early on, scoring in the first 30 seconds of the game, but it was disallowed. The Terps finally made up for the call, as Paula Infante slammed the ball into the back of the cage on a penalty corner at 21:36.
Before the end of the half, the Terps score twice more, with senior Emily Trycinski (Nazareth, Pa.) and freshman Ameliet Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) each tallying their fourth goals of the season at 29:05 and 32:37, respectively.
Maryland tacked on three more goals in the second period before calling it a day. At 36:24, freshman Kristina Foster (Medford, N.J.) sailed a shot into the top right corner of the cage after deflecting off the goalkeeper's mitt to make the score, 4-0. The goal was the first of her career.
Both Kristina Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.) and Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) connected with Infante for the second time on a penalty corner in the 49th minute to make the 5-0. Senior Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) finished off the afternoon with a hard shot into the right corner, as well.
Maryland limited the Great Danes, who had upset then-No. 11 American, 1-0, earlier in the season, to just one shot and one penalty corner. UA goalie Ashley Ross stopped seven of the Terps' 17 shots.
Maryland keepers Christina Restivo (Hereford, Md.) and Alicia Grater (Gilbertsville, Pa.) split even time in the cage, helping the Terrapins post their seventh shut out of the season.
The Terps return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 against No. 17 American. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission and parking to the event is free.
