#1 Field Hockey Tops #3 Old Dominion, 1-0
Oct. 14, 2006
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The only goal of the game was a breakaway open-net tally by freshman Nicole Muracco in the second half to lift the top-ranked Maryland field hockey team over No. 3 Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va., on Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins sweep the regular-season home-and-home series for the second time in four years.
The Terps (14-1) won the earlier meeting against the Lady Monarchs in College Park, on Sept. 4, 1-0. As in the first game in September, it took one late goal to decide the contest. Honda Award winner and senior Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) drew the goalkeeper out of the cage and dished off to Muracco (Sewell, N.J.) from the top of the circle. Muracco reached for the pass in front of the net and took the wide open shot at 42:18. The goal would stand as the game winner.
Old Dominion (13-2) had an opportunity to take the lead first. In the 38th minute, the Lady Monarchs were awarded a stroke and ODU's Dana Sensenig's shot was saved by Maryland keeper Christina Restivo, who entered the game to face the penalty stroke, preserving the scoreless tie. Sensenig led the nation in strokes, boasting a 100 percent conversion rate heading into the game.
Maryland was outshot for the first time this season, 12-11, while both teams were even with eight saves. Junior Kathryn Masson (Richmond, British Columbia), who played all 70 minutes, made a season-high seven saves. ODU's Kelly Driscoll registered eight. The Terps were also outcornered, 8-3.
The Terrapins' win at Foreman Field is Old Dominion's first home loss of the season.
Maryland returns to College Park for a Sunday, Oct. 15 matchup, hosting the University at Albany. The game is slated for 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
