Oct. 14, 2005
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team suffered only its second loss of the season, falling to No. 8 Old Dominion, 4-1, on Friday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Senior Tiffany Marsh scored Maryland's lone goal.
Long-time rival ODU (11-4) was in command in the first half, attempting 11 shots and scoring four times in the period, while limiting the Terps (14-2) to just four shot attempts. The Lady Monarchs' Janelle Engle got things started quickly, converting a penalty corner just 1:05 into the game.
Maryland held off Old Dominion for the next 24 minutes, but a Shannon Mobley tally at 25:10 gave ODU a 2-0 lead. Three minutes later, Denise Admiraal cushioned the lead to 3-0. Admiraal scored again with less than a minute remaining in the first half to put the Lady Monarchs in front, 4-0.
Despite trailing 4-0 at the break, the Terps came out strong in the second half, attempting 14 shots in the second stanza, one more than Old Dominion had attempted all game. Defensively, Maryland also buckled down on the high-powered offense which was ranked second in the nation, limiting ODU to just two shots.
Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) knocked in an unassisted goal to the far right corner, breaking up the shutout just five minutes into the second half, making the score 4-1.
Although the Terps turned on the offensive pressure, ODU was able to hold them at bay and did not let another Maryland goal get by.
Maryland also out-cornered Old Dominion, 7-5. All five of ODU's corners were in the first half. Monarch goalkeeper Mary Cate Gordon made nine saves while Maryland's Kathryn Masson notched five.
