Oct. 9, 2010
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team (11-1, 4-0 ACC), ranked No. 2 in the latest Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, beat No. 14 Duke (6-7, 0-4 ACC) 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park. Senior Katie O'Donnell and freshmen Ali McEvoy and Jill Witmer each scored in the win.
"It's great to get another ACC win," head coach Missy Meharg said. "As far as I'm concerned, Duke is a really, really athletic team. Every year they seem to gain some momentum and we'll probably see them again. Maryland responded to playing Duke's two different systems very well and I think that helped us maintain possession and control of the match."
O'Donnell struck in the eighth minute of play when she sent a shot in to give the Terps the 1-0 lead. It was her 14th goal of the season. McEvoy scored 21 minutes later on a penalty corner setup from O'Donnell and junior Lauren Barr to take a two goal lead into the break.
The game remained at 2-0 for 31 minutes of the second half. Duke's Emmie Le Marchand scored on a penalty corner deflection from Tara Jennings with 3:54 remaining in the game. Two minutes later, Witmer scored on a deflection from sophomore Janessa Pope on the left side to finalize the score at 3-1.
Redshirt junior Melissa Vassalotti started in goal and notched three saves on the Blue Devils' five shots. The Terrapins took 20 shots in the game and Duke goalkeeper Samantha Nelson had nine saves on the day. Maryland also held the penalty corner advantage, 12-5.
Saturday's game closed a stretch for the Terps that included seven straight games against ranked opponents. The Terrapins went 6-1 in that stretch.
